The community calendar is reserved for non-profits and local events, these announcements will run at no charge but must be under 50 words. April 19 Stargaze at El Malpais

El Malpais National Monument will host an evening of science and stargazing at the El Malpais National Monument Visitor Center on Friday, April 19, 2024, from 6:309:00pm. Joining us from the Albuquerque Astronomical Society is Derek Wallentinsen. Derek is an astronomer and a retired National Park Service Ranger. This free program begins at 6:30 pm inside the Visitor Center located at 1900 East Santa Fe Avenue in Grants, N.M. Telescope viewing will follow at 7:30 pm. Bring plenty of warm layers for the outside portion of the event.

April 20 Run for the Wall Benefit

Saturday, April 20, 10:00-12:00 am, get your Coggins, Vaccines, Health Certificates, Worming, Coggins Teeth Floating Certificate. This is offered to only horses ‘hauled’ into the Grants rodeo grounds during the fair, so plan on saving a little money and meet other horseman! April 26 April Astronomy Month El Malpais National Monument Tour at El Calderon. View the park’s dark night skies at El Calderon with a constellation tour as we transition from winter to summer constellations. The El Calderon parking lot is located off of Highway 53, about 22 miles from Grants. All programs are free of charge and do not require reservations. Dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a flashlight or headlamp with a red light setting if possible. All outdoor programs are weather dependent. May 23 Shellebrate World Turtle Day Let’s Party! Grab your party hats, dancing shoes, sunglasses and find that old disco ball, as it’s almost time to party for World Turtle Day™ 2024! American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species turtles and of tortoises, is shellebrating its 24th annual international World Turtle Day on May 23. Join the fun as this year’s theme is “Let’s Party” with rescue favorites Bunkle, Spinner and Evil who are waking up from hibernation and ready to rock the globe. Now, because of global warming, there is a more urgent reason to bring attention to the turtles of the world. It is estimated that 61 percent of turtle species are already extinct.
