El Malpais National Monument to Host Astronomy Program with Derek Wallentinsen on April 19, 2024

Grants, NM—El Malpais National Monument will host an evening of science and stargazing at the El Malpais National Monument Visitor Center on Friday, April 19, 2024, from 6:30-9:00pm.

Joining us from the Albuquerque Astronomical Society is Derek Wallentinsen. Derek is an astronomer and a retired National Park Service Ranger. Presently he is continuing to use his talents in astronomy interpretation, education, outreach, and dark-sky preservation. His roles include Astronomer in Residence at Petrified Forest National Park, Astronomy in Chile Educator Ambassador, NASA Eclipse Ambassador, and NASA Solar System Ambassador. His 45-minute presentation will be followed by a star tour and viewing through telescopes, (weather permitting).

This free program begins at 6:30 pm inside the Visitor Center located at 1900 East Santa Fe Avenue in Grants, N.M. Telescope viewing will follow at 7:30 pm. Bring plenty of warm layers for the outside portion of the event.
