The Grants High School basketball teams are in right smack in the middle of district play. The GHS boys basketball team ranked 8th in the maxpreps.com basketball rankings with a 14-8 overall record and 2-2 district record. They are 3rd in district 5 4-A after a 81-62 defeat of the Belen Eagles (7-13, 0-3) in a district game at home last Friday.

The Pirates outscored the Eagles by 10 points in the first quarter and 4th quarter in that 19 point win over Belen.

The GHS boys basketball team will host the Valencia Jaguars on Friday the 9th of February at the Port of the Pirates. In their first district match up the Pirates defeated Valencia by a 3 point shot at the end of regulation at their gym (69-66).

This rematch should be a high energy game with both teams looking to strengthen their position in their district.

The Jaguars are currently ranked 11th in 4A in the state and are 4th in district 5-4A just behind Grants.

St. Pius High School at 11-8, 3-0 is the district leader followed by Highland High School in 2nd place with a 15-5, 3-0 record.

The lady Pirates defeated the lady Eagles of Belen (8-12,1-2) by a score of 50-46 on the road and improved their record to 4-17, 1-3. Viviana Valencia led the Pirate charge in that victory with 19 points.

They will play the lady Jaguars of Valencia (12-9,1-2) next on February 9th on the road.

The lady Pirates are last in district 5 4-A and are currently 4-17, 1-3. St. Pius High School is at the top of the district with a 17-3,3-0 followed by Highland High School with a 10-10, 2-1 record. Valencia High School comes in at third with a current record of 12-9,12. The lady Eagles of Belen are 4th with a 8-12, 1-2 record.

The lady Hawks of Laguna-Acoma are 12-7, 1-0 after a 65-47 defeat of Crownpoint (6-22,0-6) in a non-district match up. District play is just getting started for the Hawks basketball teams.

Next up for the lady Hawks will be a tough district match up with the lady Lynx of Rehoboth (8-9,0-0) in an away game on Friday, February 9th at 5:30pm. The L-A boys basketball team (3-17, 01) will have their hands full in their next district game against the 13-6, 00 Rehoboth Lynx in an away game also on Friday, February 9th at 7:30pm.
