“Tough game—no doubt—we knew Silver was going to be tough— they are every bit of that number four ranking–I feel the score doesn’t tell the whole story,” said Grants High School Head Football Coach Steve Brown. “Our kids battled until they end—and I couldn’t be more proud of their fight.”

The Pirates lost 40-7 to the fourth ranked Silver Fighting Colts who improved to 6-2, 1-0. The Pirates mustered one touchdown in the game and that came from a 34yard run from running back Andres Lazos. The Pirates held the Colts to six points in that first half. The Colts came out kicking in the second quarter and tallied up 21 points while the Pirates were unable to answer with any points of their own–halftime score was 27-7. In the third quarter the Pirates defense was able to hold the Colts offense to a field goal making the score 30-7. The Colts added 10 more points in the fourth quarter for a final score of 40-7.

“We just couldn’t find the endzone,” said Brown as he summed up the offense.

The Pirates stats included 292-yards on offense and the quarterbacks combined for 14 completions and 20 attempts for 127-yards.

“With two games left—we still have a goal of making the playoffs and maybe getting another change to test ourselves against the best,” said Brown. “That's the only way we will get better in the long run–the team has matured a bunch over the season.” Brown added, “Now we have a group of young men who understand that they have just as much right to be successful as anyone else as long as we put in the work.”

The Pirates are now tied with Valencia High School (4-4, 0-1) at 0-1 in districts, after Valencia lost their district opener to St. Pius 20-18. Silver and St. Pius are tied at 1-0 in the district. The Pirates will play the Valencia Jaguars on the road in a road game this upcoming Friday, October 20 at 7 pm.

“Valencia poses a very big threat to us because they are literally in the same boat as us–they have a new staff, 4-4 record and are fighting for a playoff spot,” said Brown “It’s guaranteed they will come out banging and we will need to be ready and able to respond punch for punch.”
