Ho Ho Ho or should we say HOops HOops HOops --Christmas season is also basketball tournament season in Cibola County and this weekend teams, coaches and basketball fans had their popcorn in their hands as 8 teams squared off.

The annual GHS boys basketball Eddie Pena Holiday classic and the girls basketball Robert Daily Classic took take place this past weekend on the Ron Bohls Court at Grants High School.

Boudy Melonas, a junior, was named All Tournament MVP for the Pirates. Noah Victorino, a senior and Tristin Fernandez, a sophomore, were named All Tournament.

Robert Daily Classic

The lady Pirates placed third in their tournament and played a total of 3 games in a round robin format where the team with the best record is declared the overall champ. GHS lady Pirate head coach Douglas “Dougie’ Hickman said, “It was a good tournament, the teams that were invited were well rounded---they gave us a good playing experience.”

The lady Pirates played Socorro High School (1-9) on December 19th and handily defeated them 5328. In their second game on December 22nd they lost to cross-county tournament rival Laguna-Acoma by a narrow 3 points score, 4340. For the lady Pirates Promise Garcia has 17 points followed by Vivyana Valencia with 12 points.

Gianna Carillo had 17 for the lady Hawks followed by Tavani Scott with 9 points.

The lady Pirates faced the formidable lady Steers of Magdalena (8-2) in their third game of the tournament on Saturday, December 23rd whom defeated the lady Pirates 51-33. Promise Garcia had 14 points and Abryanna Garcia had 7 points for the Pirates. The lady Steers Jorianne Mirabal had 16 points with 6 from free throws while Jenna Ganadonegro 12 points with 8 from free throws.

“We are in a positive way moving forward and making adjustments,” said Hickman as he summed up the tournament.

“I feel the girls are excited for themselves,” said lady Hawk head coach Lacey Natseway as she shared her views after taking 1st place at the Robert Daily Classic tournament. “Going into the tournament I wanted the girls to have fun before the new year,’ said Natseway The lady Hawks went 30 at the tournament are currently 4-3 with a 2 big wins for them. On December 21st they narrowly defeated the lady Steers of Magdelena (8-2) by a score of 5350. The lady Hawks built up their score early as they went 16-5 in the first quarter then Magdalena regrouped and outscored the Hawks 14-9 in the second half for a halftime score of 25-19. Bring the popcorn out, it’s going to be close. The Steers outscored the Hawks 15-6 in the third quarter for a score of 34-31 lead for the Steers. In the fourth and final quarter the lady Hawks went 2216 to win by 3 points.

“They were playing to get the most of it,” said Natseway of that game.

All tournament MVP went to Brianna Carillo while Taviana Scott received All Tournament. “We are going to practice and get some rest mentally,” said Natseway about the team’s next phase.
