Pirates 1-1 in Districts

Two games deep into districts and the Grants High School Pirate boys’ basketball team is currently third in district 4A just behind St. Pius (108,2-0) and Highland (145,1-0). The Pirates defeated the Valencia Jaguars (11-8,0-1) in their first district game by a buzzer beater trey by Boudy Melonas. The score was 69-66. The date was Tuesday, January 23.

The Pirates were attempting to use some of the momentum at home in their second district game against St. Pius, however, the Sartans had other plans.

The Pirates were soundly defeated by 33 points to give the Pirates their first loss in district play. The Sartans scored in double digits every quarter and outscored the Pirates 27-8 in the fourth quarter for a final score of 76-43.

The Pirates fall to 137 overall and 1-1 in district play. They will play their next game against Highland High School (14-5, 1-0) on Tuesday, January 30th on the road.

The Lady Pirates are 3-16 and have a 0-2 record after losing to Valencia High School (117,1-0) on January 23 by a score of 55-22. They lost to the Lady Sartans of St. Pius (16-3,2-0) by a score of 56-17 on January 26. They will face the Lady Hornets of Highland High School (8-10,0-1) on Tuesday, January 30 at home.

The Lady Hawks of Laguna-Acoma are currently 8-7 and recently defeated Santa Rosa High School on January 27 by a score of 56-33 in a nondistrict game. They will play Pine Hill (11-8,1-1) on Tuesday, January 30 in a non-district game at home. The L-A boys basketball team is currently 2-15 after a recent 62-51 loss to Santa Rosa High School (15-4). Their next game will be a non-district game against Pine Hill High School (11-9,20) on January 30 at home also.
