The Grants High School boys’ basketball team went 2-1 over the weekend to improve to 6-2. They played in the Marv Sanders Memorial Invitational Tournament in the four corners area and squared off with the 5A Farmington Scorpions (7-0) for a second time. The Scorpions were able to able to defeat the Pirates 91-55 and improved their record to 7-0. In the second round of the tournament the Pirates played against the Shiprock Chieftans (5-3) and were able to come through with a win 72-67. The Pirates then handily defeated Kirtland Central High School in the consolation game by a score of 80-50 in their final game of the tournament. The Pirates next game will be on Thursday, December 21 against Rehoboth Christian (5-2) at 5:30 pm at the Pirates home tournament, the Eddie Pena Classic to be held this weekend.

The Lady Pirates basketball team is currently 1-5 and will play Aztec High School (1-2) on Tuesday, December 19 and then they will play against the Socorro High School (1-7) on Thursday, December 21 in the first round of their own home tournament, the Robert Daily Classic.

CIBOLA COUNTY SPORTS ROUND-UP

The Lady Hawks of Laguna- High School are 2-3 and will play Magdalena High School (6-1) on December 21 at the Robert Daily Classic tournament at Grants High School. Game time is 2:30 pm at the LA boys basketball team is 0-7 and will also be playing this week at the Eddie Pena Holiday Classic at GHS. They will play Magdalena High School (7-0) on December 21 at 4 pm.

Three Pirates of the varsity football team were selected to the 4-A All-State Football second team. Larry Meader, a senior, was selected as a linebacker, Andres Lazos, a junior, was selected as a running back and Noah Lundstrom also a junior was selected as an honorable mention secondary. Lundstrom is a kicker for the Pirates.
