GHS head football coach Steve Brown wanted to come out banging against the Valencia Jaguars last Friday and that’s exactly what they did. In a crucial district game for both teams the Pirates came out ahead 14-7 in the first quarter the Pirates added another 7 points in the second quarter to make the halftime score 21-7 Pirates. The Pirates and Valencia traded a touchdown a piece in the 3rd and 4th quarter for the final score of 35-21.

“The plan was to be able to fill the void left by Andes Lazos being out (leg injury) also Aaron Jimnez (defensive end) being out,” said GHS football head coach Steve Brown. “We were very excited to see the kids across the board stepped it up—Julian Padilla filled the running back position and had 247 yards, 19 carries and 2 touchdowns.”

Coach Brown also emphasized his defense in that game. “The combo of Clemente Garcia, Gary Chavez and Larry Meador did really good job filling in for Jimenes at the defensive end spot.” Brown added, “We have a 2 headed monster in the backfield—Deandre Chavez, quarterback, completed 10 passes for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns,” said Brown. “Our offense is peaking— They are all doing a great job—Cardeno Chavez and Joe Clawson rounded out the scoring with 1 touchdown each,” said Brown.

The Pirates move to second in the district just behind Silver High School with a 7-2,2-0 record. The Pirates are currently 5-4,11 just ahead of St. Pius High School at 4-5, 1-1. Another big district showdown looms as the Pirates take on St. Pius this Friday at home in their final regular season game of the year. “Friday is the biggest game this school has seen in several years—St. Pius is always a really good team—we are hoping that our body of work is enough to get us a shot at the playoffs,” said Brown.

Friday is also senior night for the Pirate football team. “I am confident our kids have learned how to prepare and will be ready—it should be a great contest” said Brown of the upcoming game this Friday, October 27th at 7:00pm at the Port of the Pirates.
