District rival, the Highland Hornets, played the Pirates on Tuesday, April 26 and felt the full potential of the number two ranked baseball team in the state.

The Grants High School Pirates swept the Hornets 16-0.

“I thought it went as expected,” said GHS head coach Mike Furebee. The Pirates scored one run per inning for the first three innings for a score of 3-0 at the start of the 4th inning. Then Boom! The Pirates bats came alive and scored 13 runs in the fourth inning to close out the game.

“It took us a few innings to get adjusted to the pitching, but the outcome was what we expected,” said Furbee.

Niko Young led the Pirates with four RBIs followed by Izeyah Manzanares with three, Estevan Barela with two and Noah Lundstrom with one RBI apiece.

On mound Estevan Barela pitched four innings and allowed one hit and had four strikeouts; while Dominick Gonzales pitched the fifth inning and allowed one walk and had seven strikeouts.

The Pirates hold a strong second place in the state rankings for 4A in the coaches’ poll as well as the state rankings.

Next up for the Pirates will be a stronger team: the Belen Eagles at 16-8, 4-2.

“We will be using the next two games to prepare for state—we will be throwing our three starting pitchers two innings each, and a closer one inning,” said Furbee.
