Jessie Barela 1933-2020

Graveside services for Jessie Barela will be held at 12 p.m on Monday June 29, 2020 at Grants Memorial Park.

Jessie Barela 86, of Grants, New Mexico passed away peacefully at his home on June 19, 2020 as the result of complications from a stroke.

Jessie was born to Jesus and Carmen Barela on December 31, 1933 in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He was united in marriage on August 17, 1957.

Jessie was a proud veteran who served in the United States Army. He was a longtime business owner who especially loved the grocery business, but always had a side business venture. Being a natural salesman and extrovert, he also loved selling cars and interacting with his customers. Jessie loved the game of golf. He played locally at the Zuni Mountain Country Club and Coyote del Malpais Golf Course and was thrilled when he made a hole-in-one.

Jessie belonged to many organizations and boards. He was honored to be a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and served in many positions including Exalted Ruler.

Most of all, he was a man with a heart of gold.

He is survived by his wife: Lorraine Barela; daughters: Jessica Peña, of Grants, N.M., Linda Lopez and husband Mike of St. Paul, Minnesota, Patsy Smallwood of California, OJ Tomlinson and wife Crystal of Grants, Jesse Barela and wife Linda of Oregon; grandchildren: Miquela, Ariel, Noemi and Aliana Lopez, Tammy Smallwood and Kimberly Garcia; greatgrandchildren Alexis and Alex Tomlinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Jesus and Carmen Barela; his son-in-law: Anthony L. Peña and son-in-law Don Smallwood; brother: Max Barela; and sister: Angie Sandoval; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law: Frances and Stephan Archuleta.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Martinez, Greg Martinez, Tomas Ontiveros, Shaun Martinez, Jerry Martinez and James Valenzuela.

Honorary Pall Bearers are Steve Archuleta, Andy Martinez, Nestor Griego, Elisio Alcon, Mike Lopez, Jesse Gomez, and Paul Marez.
