GHS Track: Ten to state

Ten Grants High School track and field members are headed off to the New Mexico Activities Association state tournament this upcoming weekend after qualifying earlier in the season. Eight girls and two boys will be boarding the Pirate bus headed to the meet. Head Coach of the lady Pirates track team Leon Bachman is pleased to have eight lady Pirates headed to the meet. “The kids stepped it up, the long and triple jumpers really did well,” said Bachman of the district meet. Bachman also acknowledged that assistant coach Tiffany Urioste has really put a lot of time and effort working with the jumpers. Megan Palacio, a senior, will participate in five events - 100 meters, long jump, triple jump, medley relay and 400 relay.

Palacio was the second highest point scorer last week at the district meet with 20 points. Palacio is expected to do well at the state meet, especially in the triple jump where she is currently second in the state in 5-A with a jump of 35’ 5”. Palacio is just five inches off the GHS record for the triple jump held by Alissa Horacek. Horacek set the record of 35’ 10” in 2006 when she was a senior.
