GRANTS, NM – On the evening of September 11, at about 9 p.m., Grants resident, Ian Smith, drove east on Santa Fe Avenue. All appeared to be normal. However, when he returned about one hour later, at approximately 10 p.m. the tree at the corner of Fire and Ice Park at Iron Avenue and Santa Fe Avenue was surrounded by city responders: a city maintenance crew, the fire department, men with chainsaws, ambulances, and front-end loaders.
Smith observed that they were tending to the giant tree that has long been on the corner of the park. In the brief time Smith had been at Dairy Queen, the tree had suddenly split.
Why or how this happened has not been revealed, yet. The fallen segment has been taken somewhere; we assume for inspection. We can only wait to find out what they have learned about the split.
