GRANTS, N.M. - Fr. Ivan Torres, assigned to the VA Hospital in Albuquerque by the Diocese of Puerto Rico, put in a request to retire after 26 years to care for his ailing mother. His request has been granted. Fr. Torres’ last Mass at theVA will be August 22nd.

The first 29 Navajo recruits selected for the U.S. Marine Corps Code Talker program are sworn in at Fort Wingate on May 4, 1942. The Marines went on to develop a Navajo-based military code used to transmit vital battlefield communications during World War II. Navajo Code Talkers Day is observed Aug. 14.
