Grants MainStreet Project invites the public to an open house to hear about their work on June 30 at 6 p.m. in “The Mission Gallery” at 422 W. Santa Fe Ave. Refreshments and door prizes await!

July Free Movies in July

July movies at the gallery feature military branches and those who serve. Selected films are “Born on the Fourth of July”, based on a true story; “Raising Colors”, a fictionalized account of a woman in France’s Navy; and “Glory” adopted from journals about the first Black unit who served in the Civil War. Double Six Art Gallery is on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Avenue. Saturdays are July 1, 15, and 29. Time is 2 p.m.

Free Music Lessons

Music appeals to all ages! The Double Six Art Gallery welcomes all for a new series about musical concepts and music history. DVD programs will be shown each Friday in July at 4 p.m. Try it for a month. Gallery is on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Avenue. Dates are July 7, 14, 21, and 28.

July 1 Free Movie – “Born on the Fourth of July” This Saturday, July 1, a factbased film “Born on the Fourth of July” will show how being in the Vietnam War changed one Marine’s life. Ron Kovic was the soldier. Show-time is 2 p.m. at the Double Six Art Gallery on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave.

July 4 Independence Day

Government offices closed for the July 4 holiday. The Grants-Cibola County Chamber of Commerce, Grants Rodeo Association, and the City of Grants have prepared a day of fun and excitement for the community, see below for more information.

Independence Day Parade See Page B5 of today’s edition for more information on the parade, including information for floats and vendors. Parade begins at 9 a.m., live dance performances begin at 11 a.m. at Fire and Ice Park.

Wild West Rodeo

Rodeo begins at 2 p.m. at 223 Betty Drive in Grants. See Page B5 of today’s edition for more information on the rodeo events.

Firework Display

Parking opens for the fireworks show at 5 p.m. at Coyote Del Malpais Golf Course, 2001 George Hanosh Blvd, Grants. Fireworks begin at Dusk. See Page B5 of today’s edition for more information on the fireworks display.

July 7 Summer Activities

School out… for summer! Activities available at the Double Six Art Gallery consist of art education camps on alternate Saturdays at 2 p.m. Age appropriate for those eight – 12 years. Music education lessons on dvd will be shown every Friday at 4 p.m., age appropriate for 12 – 112 years. No quizzes! No tests! Music lessons begin July 7. Let’s enjoy reading.

July 13 CYFD Resource Parent Meeting We need parents who are able and willing to support children and their families as they navigate the child welfare system. July 15 Free Movie – “Raising Colors” In July, you can watch the acting talents of Tom Cruise, Diane Rouxel, Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman. Hey! Who’s Diane Rouxel? Attend the movie “Raising Colors”, Saturday, July 15, to discover a young artist in a universal role. Venue is the Double Six Art Gallery and time is 2 p.m.

Calling All Poets - Cibola Arts Council DEADLINE: Saturday July 15, 2023. Cibola Arts Council is putting out a call for poetry submissions a few of which we would like to display both inside and outside the Double Six Art Gallery. If you have a piece or two (two is maximum accepted for now), please send to cibolaarts66@ gmail or mail to Cibola Arts Council 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave. Grants, NM 87020. July 15 is the deadline for submissions to be considered for display in the outside displays. A committee will review submissions anonymously and select five pieces. If you have any interest in participating in an ongoing poetry group, please let us know and we will see if there is enough interest to get a group going

July 22 Art Swap

Spring cleaning fives you a chance to consider the art treasures you’ve accumulated. Maybe someone else would appreciate a work of art you’ve had and enjoyed. The Double Six Art Gallery will host its first art swap and sale, July 22, form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Let’s gather, enjoy and support the arts.

A regular Grants City Council meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on July 26 in the Grants City Council Chambers at 600 W. Santa Fe Ave. in Grants. Agendas will be available on July 21 at City Hall.

July 29 Free Movie – “Glory” Actor Morgan Freeman called his role of John Rawlins in “Glory”, the most satisfying of his career. Join movie-goers Saturday, July 29 at 2 p.m. in the Double Six Art Gallery to see a historically accurate film about the first Black unit in the Civil War. Location is on Route 66/ 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave.
