Cibola Water Monitoring Report

Body

Bluewater and Rio San Jose Data as of October 6, 2025

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – This report seeks to track the flow of water in Cibola County. Bluewater Lake and the Rio San Jose both have United States Geological Survey monitoring stations where this data is pulled from.

Bluewater Lake continues its slow seasonal decline as fall sets in, holding 4,854 acre-feet of water as of 12:15 p.m. on October 6. That’s down slightly from 4,878 acrefeet recorded two days earlier, and nearly 200 acre-feet lower than a week ago. The steady drawdown reflects continued evaporation and minimal inflow, typical for this time of year.

The Rio San Jose remained stable at 1.91 feet on the afternoon of October 6, showing no measurable change from the previous week. The river has held within a narrow range since early September, mirroring the persistence of dry conditions across Cibola County.

With drought conditions still affecting 100 percent of the county, monitoring these systems remains critical as Cibola moves deeper into autumn. The recent federal government shutdown has so far had a limited impact on data retrieval efforts.
