B L U E W A T E R LAKE, N.M. – As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, bringing with it the promise of sunny skies and sparkling waters, Bluewater Lake State Park and the New Mexico Parks Division is inviting visitors to enjoy one of New Mexico’s most scenic reservoirs. While the lake offers a serene setting for boating, kayaking, and fishing amidst views of the Zuni Mountains, New Mexico State Parks is also reminding all visitors to celebrate responsibly.
From July 4th to 6th, as part of the national Operation Dry Water campaign, State Parks rangers will intensify their efforts to ensure that boating under the influence (BUI) laws are strictly enforced. The campaign is driven by a nationwide mission to reduce alcohol and drug-related incidents and fatalities on waterways.
Toby Velasquez, State Parks Director, highlighted the critical nature of the initiative. 'Each year, we encounter preventable tragedies that could have been avoided if boaters refrained from consuming alcohol while operating vessels,' Velasquez said. 'Our officers will be out in force during the holiday weekend, ensuring that everyone is boating sober and safely.'
In 2023, during the same enforcement weekend, officers nationwide engaged with over 302,000 boaters, resulting in 717 BUI arrests and nearly 33,000 citations and warnings for various safety violations. These statistics underline the significant impact of Operation Dry Water in promoting safer boating practices.
Boating at Bluewater Lake — known for its beautiful pinon-juniper landscape and as a top spot for tiger muskie fishing — should be a fun and safe experience for everyone. Whether you're navigating a motorboat or paddling in a canoe, the effects of alcohol can impair a boater's judgment, balance, vision, and reaction time. This can lead to accidents, including slips, falls overboard, and collisions.
For those planning to spend their holiday at Bluewater Lake, remember that all vessels, from motorized boats to nonmotorized craft like kayaks and paddleboards, fall under BUI laws. Boaters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with New Mexico’s boating regulations and the importance of life jacket usage by visiting the State Parks Boating Program online.
This Fourth of July, let's keep Bluewater Lake's waters safe and pristine by boating sober, wearing life jackets, and enjoying the natural beauty responsibly. With careful planning and a commitment to safety, visitors can ensure that their holiday celebrations are both enjoyable and safe, leaving only positive memories of their time at the lake.
