GRANTS, NM — This November 1st and 2nd, the Double Six Art Gallery invites the community to join in a vibrant and meaningful Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration.
This holiday, observed throughout Mexico and regions of Central and South America, is a time to honor loved ones who have passed and celebrate their memory with joy, art, and tradition. Emerging from a blend of indigenous practices and Catholicism during Spain’s colonization of Mesoamerica, Día de los Muertos has evolved into a colorful and lively celebration.
Families and friends come together on these days to remember and honor their ancestors, and at times, even commune with them in a liminal space between the living and the dead.
Common Practices You Can Expect at the Gallery Celebration:
Ofrendas (Altars)
View or contribute to the traditional ofrendas, altars filled with photos, mementos, and the favorite foods or items of those being honored. These altars invite the spirits of the deceased to join in the celebration.
Sugar Skulls
Learn about or create your own calaveras de azúcar (sugar skulls), a beloved symbol of the holiday that reflects both remembrance and the beauty of life.
Calacas & Catrinas
Enjoy the presence of calacas (decorative skeletons) and see Catrinas, participants who paint their faces in a style that mixes elegance and humor, reminding us to find joy and lightness even in death.
“Día de los Muertos is about transforming loss into something beautiful and celebratory,” said Double Six Gallery Director Eric Sedillos. “This is a time for families and our community to connect with our heritage, share stories, and honor our loved ones in a colorful, uplifting way.”
The Double Six Art Gallery will also showcase local artists artwork inspired by the themes of life, death, and memory. Performances and interactive activities will take place throughout the event, offering attendees a full cultural immersion in this meaningful celebration.
The event is free to the public, and all are encouraged to participate by visiting the gallery or contributing by building an ofrenda. Donations are appreciated to support local artists and future events.
