GRANTS, NM - Join us for the Eclipse on Route 66 on October 14, 2023, in Grants, New Mexico. El Malpais National Monument (NPS) is partnering with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), City of Grants, Grants Main Street, and the Village of Milan on viewing locations and eye safety for this annular eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 9:12am, maximum eclipse will be from 10:34-10:37, with the partial eclipse ending at 12:07pm.
An eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the Earth and sun. This “ring of fire” eclipse is a partial eclipse where a ring of the sun’s surface is visible around the edge of the moon. Because the sun is not fully obscured, there is no point during an annular eclipse where it is safe to look directly at the sun without proper eye protection. Safety | 2023 Annular Eclipse – NASA Solar System Exploration Locations for maximum eclipse viewing include the El Malpais Visitor Center in Grants, Sandstone Bluffs and BLM Ranger Station on Hwy. 117, Grants Municipal Golf Course, Fire and Ice Park in downtown Grants, and Kearns Field in the Village of Milan, New Mexico. La Ventana Arch will be available for overflow parking on Hwy. 117 however, it will not be in maximum eclipse. Parking lots at the viewing locations on Hwy. 117 will close when they are full, and traffic will be directed into Grants and Milan. Free shuttle service will be available with stops at the golf course, Fire and Ice Park, and Kearns field.
