GRANTS, N.M. — Leaf-peeping season is arriving in Cibola County, with aspens on Mt. Taylor and the Zuni high country typically turning first from late September into early October, followed by cottonwoods along the San José and Bluewater valleys through late October. The Cibola National Forest reminds visitors to plan ahead as crowds and traffic increase.
Locally, the Mt. Taylor Ranger District advises slow, courteous driving on curvy canyon roads such as NM-547 (Lobo Canyon Road) and on gravel Forest Roads beyond the pavement, where conditions can be rough and require high-clearance vehicles. Trailhead lots fill quickly; only park in marked spaces and keep driveways clear. Expect spotty cell service, fast-changing weather, cooler evenings, and active wildlife. Pack layers, water, and a paper map, and check site status before you go.
