GRANTS, N.M. - On August 19, the Grants Cibola County Schools Board Meeting took place and lasted three and a half hours, including an executive session. In this meeting, they discussed various updates, infrastructure improvements, future projects, and recognized staff.

The summer projection was expected to accommodate 2,800 students, but the actual enrollment surpassed expectations, reaching 3,300 students—an impressive increase of 400 students from initial forecasts.

Staffing

Superintendent Lane Widner shared updates regarding staffing, revealing that the district is almost fully staffed. The vacancies, as of the 19th, include a second-grade position at Cubero Elementary, a music position at Mt. Taylor Elementary, and a secondary math position at Laguna Acoma High School. Widner urged anyone who knows potential candidates for these roles to reach out.

Infrastructure Improvements

Widner briefly explained that the Mesa View Traffic “is getting better, and it’s exciting to see the construction happening there.” The anticipated developments promise a well-equipped school environment in the near future.

Updates on cooling systems were also discussed. The schools has a closed-loop heating and air system that prevents water freezing issues, enhancing the overall climate control in buildings.

In terms of technology, the district is about two-thirds finished with the smart board one screen role out and is focusing on getting new Chromebooks. “Any extra money we have, we’re putting it to Chromebooks,” Widner stated.

Future Projects

“Items that come up and we have plans for and we’ll come to you board members for action in the future” include the remodeling of the board room, mobile kitchens, mobile concession trailers, an auction, and additions like bleachers for the GHS baseball field and air conditioning and heating for GHS.

Recognitions

The Social Emotional Love Award was presented to the Security Team, whose members are learning to use Verkada security system and are investigating security measures. Coordinator of Security, Jeremy Hocker stated, “This really is not my award; it’s a reflection of everyone in our district.”

The Technology Team was also recognized for their work with the new smart boards. Mr. Tafoya said “I have a great team; this is for you guys too.”

Additionally, the meeting honored Edu-Champion Belt Recipient Gary Atensio and his crew of fourteen, who have been essential in refreshing classroom experiences. Atensio explained “We’re getting a lot of stuff and we’ll continue to do that.”
