Every year we hope and pray that we will be safe.
Every year we work hard to protect our land.
Every year, a different part of New Mexico is visited by The Greatest Danger we face. This year, that great danger is affecting towns and villages all across our state. This menace to society wants to visit places where the weeds are tall and dry, it is the menace’s habitat where it best thrives.
New Mexico has a great variety of famous spooky creatures. The Chupacabra, La Llorona, Zozobra, and here we even have the Lummis Man in Milan. But, all of these creatures have one fatal downfall – Fire.
The spirit that possesses Fire is not an evil one, it has one simple goal: Feed.
Cibola’s Tumbleweed Terror is a threat on its own, with malapais-like claws and sandstone colored skin. When he is resting, The Tumbleweed Terror falls to pieces and can roll peacefully down the road. This is contributes to The Greatest Danger.
When fire comes, The Tumbleweed Terror stops being just a basic menace, his body becomes fuel for The Greatest Danger. Fire comes and eats away at the tumbleweeds; destroying our old menace and everything else it comes into contact with.
The Greatest Danger is almost formless, after it eats something, the only bit left over is charred and emitting smoke. There is a great hunger in the hole this formless beast has for a stomach. Not unlike hungry caterpillars, The Greatest Danger will eat until it has its fill, unlike hungry caterpillars, The Greatest Danger does not leave behind beauty, only destruction.
Up north we see the effects of The Greatest Danger. It is forcing people to flee from their homes, as it comes, hungry, to swallow the land and leave it desolate. No animal or beast can escape its danger, it is so hungry and looking for its next meal.
The Greatest Danger wants to come to Grants and Milan and the forests all around us. The only thing that can stop The Greatest Danger is our fire departments and personal protection. Don’t throw out lit cigarette butts or burn your weeds right now.
Fire is scary. We need to protect ourselves if we want to avoid the fate our northern neighbors are facing. Water your grass and call the police if you see someone burning weeds.
The Greatest Danger is a preventable danger. Don’t let our county burn to the ground!
