GRANTS, NM — At Cibola General Hospital, we are proud to be part of a nationwide effort to improve maternal health outcomes through the Obstetric Patient Safety (OPS): OB Emergencies Workshop, developed by the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). Now in its 4th edition, this program focuses on the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality and prepares healthcare professionals to respond to obstetric emergencies that can occur at any point during pregnancy or postpartum period.
Recently, our small but mighty 25-bed critical access hospital in Grants, New Mexico, hosted three OPS: OB Emergencies Workshops and we are thrilled to share the impact this training has had on our team. Five of our clinicians successfully completed the OPS instructor certification, ensuring that our hospital can continue to train and educate healthcare providers to enhance maternal safety.
Three of these new instructors, Alyssha Brown, Audrianna Nanez, and Maria Atencio, are the first OPS Co-Instructors in the country! Co-instructors are non-perinatal clinicians who share the same passion for improving maternal outcomes, even while working outside of the perinatal unit. We are also proud to recognize Kristin Brown and Melissa Gabaldon who became certified instructors, making them the first OPS instructors in New Mexico, and further expanding our team’s expertise.
This achievement is a tremendous milestone for Cibola General Hospital and our community. Having five new OPS instructors means more knowledge, more training, and ultimately, better outcomes for mothers and babies in our care.
We are honored to have been part of this national movement and inspired by the dedication of our team to improving maternal safety for our state and especially our community.
