Council update – Erik Garcia
So, when I came into the Grants, City Council, there was no really good plan for the City of Grants. I started to look at the resources that the city already has, and discovered that we have many opportunities within our city limits. One of our biggest resources is our Riverwalk. The Riverwalk dumps 10,000,000 gallons of water in the Río San Jose every month, and we waste it. It just goes down south, and we lose it.
So, my wheels started to turn; and talking with the Mayor and his idea with the Bio Park and with the master drainage plan, we got with Don Jaramillo the Special Projects Director for the city, and Wilson Engineering and they came up with a plan. Now, we have a plan for every future councilman and mayor to follow. Keep in mind, this can’t happen overnight. I would love to see this in 10 years. Remember, time flies. God gave us water, we just need to figure out how to use it to our advantage. We desperately need economic growth in our community. This will be the base to reach that, outdoor activities are the fastest growing market out there. We need to capitalize on it.
So, this project will have biking and running trails, fishing, swimming, non-motor craft boating, and everything surrounding that.
Who benefits from it? We all do. With tourists visiting Grants our Gross Receipts Tax goes up, with that we have more money to match state funds to put into roads sidewalks, ball parks, Grants recreation, airport, rodeo grounds, golf course and so on. This will tie into the plan of redoing Sakelares Blvd with a trail beside it that will tie into Lobo Canyon Road, back to the river walk, and our MainStreet Route 66.
When companies like Chiles, Applebee’s or any large corporations or small business see GRT go up, they want a piece of the action. It’s just a game, and now with getting the city in the right direction finally, I’m going to deliver on my promise when I first ran for this seat, we can achieve this!
Have faith Grants, NM, we can be the safest, cleanest, most fun community! Let’s Dream Big....
More to come
