Man Charged for Sundance Stabbing

SUNDANCE, N.M. – Sundance man Larry Gene Charley was charged with attacking a person whose home he had allegedly broken into at night on October 21. Sundance, New Mexico, is north of Ramah. With hands cut from the knife he used; Charley was seen in court on November 1. All people are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, a jury trial has not yet been set. Charges were filed against Charley on October 28; he was taken into custody by the Navajo Police Department. Charley is a 60-year-old enrolled member of the Navajo Nation.

According to the criminal complaint, Charley is charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assaulting Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. Charley allegedly went to the unidentified victim’s home in the early morning of November 1, the building was located on Roadrunner Road in Sundance. Charley knocked on the door and entered the house, he allegedly looked around the home and found the victim lying in their bed.

Charley allegedly stabbed he victim in the chest, while asleep, twice. Two other residents in the home pulled Charley off of their roommate and forced Charley out of the house.

During the struggle, the victim grabbed the knife at the blade-edge, cutting his hands. The victim was transported to Gallup Indian Medical Center for medical care. The victim survived the alleged attack.

The Navajo Department of Criminal Investigation, teamed up with the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly Bell is prosecuting this case.
