MILAN, N.M. – The Village of Milan swimming pool has a new winter schedule and is open for business Tuesday through Saturday. Some local residents may have been concerned about the pool roof and structural problems identified last year, but Milan Parks and Recreation Director Leanna Tipton stated that the roof is scheduled to be replaced in March of 2023. “The biggest challenge the pool faces is attendance,” Tipton said. “I would like community feedback to see if opening on Sunday and maybe closing it one day during the week would help.”

Currently, about 10 to 20 people use the pool each day, and this number increases in the summer months.

The pool offers early morning lap swim from 5:30 - 7:30 a.m. Tuesday – Friday, 12 noon-1 p.m., and in the early evening from 5 – 6 p.m. Open Swim is Tuesday through Friday beginning at 10 am and on Saturdays starting at 1 pm. The pool can be used for private parties on Saturday. These parties must be planned in advance and paid for at the Village Hall. Private parties at the pool cost $150. Thirty swim punch passes may be purchased at Village Hall. A senior pass costs $30, Youth pass $40, and adult and family passes are $50. Pool schedules are available at the Village Hall and at the pool.

“Swimming is good on the joints and beneficial for the whole body,” Tipton said. Most health professionals agree that swimming is a great exercise for all ages. Some of the benefits of swimming include increasing your heart rate without stressing the body, tones muscle, increases strength and endurance, burns calories, and improves sleep.

Currently, the Village of Milan pool is seeking another lifeguard to join the pool team. Anyone over the age of sixteen is eligible, and the Department of Parks and Recreation will foot the bill for the two-day Lifeguard Certification class that happens in Albuquerque, N.M. If you love to swim or just enjoy supporting your community, consider this unique job.

Due to current road construction on Airport Road, taking Milan Street to Russell (Right on Russell) will get you to the pool. The pool will be closed from December 23 - 26 for the holidays.
