GRANTS, N.M. – During a recent Coffee with the Managers, Les Gaines informed the community about an unusual but necessary change for this year's Quad race in Grants.
For only the third time in its 42year history, the Mt. Taylor winter quadrathlon will take place without snow.
This year, due to a lack of snow, the traditional skiing segment will be replaced by an additional running section, transforming the event into a unique challenge for participants, and turning it into more of a triathlon.
Typically, the Quad consists of a combination of biking for 27 miles, running for 10 miles, skiing for 2 miles, and 2 miles of snowshoeing.
However, in light of this year's conditions, racers will now complete a total of 15 miles of running instead of the ski segment.
This shift is a response to the disappointing snow levels that have prompted many prospective competitors to reconsider their participation. As a result, the number of competitors has seen a decline, with current registration numbers around 170 participants, as of last week, which is a significant decrease compared to previous years.
Understandably, many athletes who might have chosen to participate are opting out, particularly those who favor skiing over running.
Despite this, Gaines is optimistic and inviting, encouraging runners to seize the opportunity by stating, 'If you're a runner and you don’t like to ski, this is your year.'
For those interested in more details about the race adjustments or to get prepared, it is encouraged that participants review the pre-race emails that have been distributed.
There is also a virtual pre-race meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 12th, at 7 PM MST, where additional information and updates will be provided. Furthermore, the official race website serves as a useful resource, featuring the updated course layout and specific rules for this year's event.
While the lack of snow may change the dynamics of the Quad, the spirit of competition and community remains resilient.
The 2025 race is set to be a memorable experience, offering unique challenges and opportunities for new and returning participants alike.
