NMSU-Grants 2025 Commencement Ceremony

GRANTS, N.M. – The graduating Class of 2025 turned their tassels the evening of May 9, during the New Mexico State University- Grants commencement ceremony.

The room was packed with graduates and family, according to campus director Dr. Marlene Chavez Toivanen, she has never seen it that full in her 27 years of working at the college. There were more than 100 graduates ready to embark on the next chapter of their lives, some of them receiving certificates, some earning degrees and others receiving their GED after hard work.

In her remarks, Dr. Chavez Toivanen emphasized the shared journey of achievement that included not only the graduates but their families, who had supported them through it all. Heartfelt mentions that not only blessed the graduates but acknowledged the parents’ sacrifices. It was a moment for families to reflect on their sacrifices and support, and to celebrate the achievements of their graduates. Additionally, stories of resilience and determination were told.

Patrick Clingman, Vice President for Student Services, praised the hard work of both the student services and custodial staff for their assistance in creating such a memorable event. Dignitary Ricardo Gonzalez reflected on the importance of second chances and perseverance, sharing his own journey of overcoming life's challenges. As graduates received their diplomas, cheers filled the gymnasium. Each name called was met with applause, highlighting the support they received individually and collectively from their families, faculty, and staff.

Two students were awarded the notable All-State scholarship, while there were a few others who received different scholarships.

Amerika Rougemont - CC Janet Prewitt, the assistant professor of mathematics, was honored for her remarkable dedication to student success, showing the unwavering commitment that NMSU Grants has toward its students. Her innovative teaching methods and support for students, emphasizing the vital role that educators play in shaping futures.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Chavez Toivonen said “It's not just the end of a semester, it’s the beginning of something new. It marks your achievement, but more importantly, the dedication, resilience, and passion that you brought here… As we close this ceremony and send you into the next chapter of your life, I want to leave you with this: Carry your pride as an NMSU Grants [graduate], wherever you go, let it remind you of how far you've come and how much potential lies ahead. Stay bold, stay determined and never stop shaping the future.”

The graduation ceremony of the Class of 2025 celebrated the hard work, resilience, and dedication of the graduates, reinforced by the encouragement and love of their families.
