GRANTS, N.M. – Grants police responded Tuesday morning to Los Alamitos Middle School after receiving a report that a student may have been in possession of a firearm on campus, according to a press release issued by the City of Grants Police Department on Dec. 16.

Police said the report was made to a teacher. Before officers arrived, the Grants-Cibola County Schools security team initiated a campus-wide shelter-in-place at approximately 9:40 a.m.

Officers arrived shortly afterward and began what the department described as a comprehensive investigation.

By the conclusion of that investigation, police determined the student was not in possession of a firearm, the department said. After speaking with multiple Los Alamitos staff members and reviewing school surveillance video, police said it was determined the campus was clear of any potential threat to students and staff.

The Grants Police Department said it is working with the local Juvenile Probation Office and Los Alamitos Middle School administration “to ensure the student involved is held appropriately accountable for their actions.”

“The safety of our students, staff and community remains our top priority,” the department wrote in a public statement, adding that it appreciated the swift response and cooperation of school staff, law enforcement and security personnel.
