Policies Changes for Students and Families at Grants High School for Remainder of 2024-2025

Body

Dear Parents and Families, We hope this letter finds you well and ready for the upcoming semester! We are writing to share some important updates about changes to policies and procedures at Grants High School that will go into effect at the start of the 2025 semester. These adjustments are being implemented to support student success and improve overall school operations.

Attendance and Tardy Policy Update

Beginning the first week of the new semester, we will be making significant changes to our attendance and tardy policy. In the past, we implemented a no-tardy policy to allow students extra time to arrive in the morning, understanding that emergencies and unforeseen delays can occasionally occur. Unfortunately, this leniency has been significantly abused, resulting in major disruptions.

Some students have treated this policy as though the school day begins at second period, arriving at 8:30 a.m. or later. Others arrive on time but loiter in hallways, restrooms, or locker rooms to avoid attending first-period classes. This behavior has contributed to overcrowded hallways, increased restroom misuse, and a concerning rise in failure rates.

Starting with the new semester, we will be reinstating our previous tardy policy. All students are expected to be in class by 8:10 a.m. After this time, doors will be locked, and students arriving late will be sent to a designated tardy room. This lockout procedure will also be enforced for periods two through eight to ensure accountability throughout the day.

We kindly ask for your support in ensuring your student is on time and present every day. Attendance plays a critical role in their academic success, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Credit Recovery Program Changes

Another change for the 2025 semester pertains to our credit recovery program fees. Historically, credit recovery through Edgenuity has cost $50 per half credit. While this rate will remain the same for the Class of 2025 seniors, it will increase to $100 per half credit for all underclassmen. Beginning with the 2026 academic year, this fee will increase further to $250 or more per half credit.

This change is being made in response to data showing a strong correlation between chronic absenteeism and course failure rates. The increase in credit recovery costs is intended to motivate students to attend class regularly and prioritize their academic success.
