GRANTS, N.M. - Public safety has emerged as a significant concern in Grants, particularly due to a significant increase in commercial burglaries noted over recent months. Grants Police Chief Maxine Monte that the Grants Police Department is taking proactive measures to respond to these incidents.

Current Situation with Burglaries

The rise in break-ins has prompted serious attention from law enforcement. One individual was arrested in late February related to these crimes but was released the following day. Additionally, investigations are ongoing, with there being a person of interest believed to be connected to multiple burglary incidents.

Preventive Measures for Residents

To mitigate the risk of becoming a victims of crime, Chief Monte advised to take several precautionary steps including securing your property, which includes locking doors and windows, installing alarm systems, using surveillance cameras, ensuring adequate lighting around property and keeping valuables out of sight to deter potential intruders.

Identifying Patterns in Crime

Investigative teams have discovered evidence linking several burglaries, assisting in identifying a person of interest across multiple cases. Patterns have emerged regarding the timing and locations of these incidents, with many occurring after 10 PM. Chief Monte explained that suspects appear to be outlining open or undeveloped area, such as empty fields, to navigate between targets undetected.

Increased Patrols and Safety Initiatives

In response to the escalating concerns over burglaries, law enforcement has implemented directed patrols-both on foot and in vehicle-in residential and park areas. This effort aims to enhance police visibility and reassure the community. Residents are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings and promptly report any suspicious activities to Cibola Regional Dispatch.

Ongoing Investigations and Community Engagement

Chief Monte wrote, “These cases have been assigned to our Detective Division, which is working closely with patrol officers. We are actively sharing information, following leads, and coordinating efforts to build strong cases.”

Every shot fired call is treated as a priority, Monte explained, with plans underway to improve response accuracy, including reviewing technology for gunshot detection. Park closures are being assessed weekly, with safety as a primary concern leading to temporary closures based on ongoing investigations.

“Community members play a critical role by reporting suspicious activity,” Chief Monte wrote. The police have received valuable information from residents regarding suspicious persons and vehicles, aiding in the identification of patterns and the development of proactive response strategies. Monte continued, “We are asking our community to partner with us, stay vigilant, secure your property, and report suspicious activity. Working together, we can prevent crime, and hold those responsible accountable.”
