Representative Eliseo “Lee” Alcon (D-Milan), a dedicated advocate for veterans, economic development, and environmental protection, announced his immediate retirement from the New Mexico House of Representatives on Saturday. After more than 15 years of public service representing District 6, Alcon steps down to focus on his health, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable contributions to his community and state.
Born and raised in New Mexico, Alcon’s career was defined by his deep commitment to serving others.
As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a combat medic during the Vietnam War, earning the Bronze Star for his courage and dedication. His military service shaped his perspective, instilling values of discipline, empathy, and resilience that guided him throughout his life.
After returning home, Alcon worked as an infirmary technician at the Kerr-McGee uranium mines and later served as a magistrate judge, experiences that gave him a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by New Mexico’s working families.
When Alcon was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives in 2008, he brought his diverse background to the Roundhouse, where he quickly established himself as a tireless advocate for his constituents.
Alcon’s tenure in the House of Representatives was marked by his dedication to improving the lives of New Mexicans, particularly veterans and their families. As Chair of the Labor, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee, he spearheaded numerous initiatives to expand resources and support for those who served the country.
Most recently, both Alcon and his fellow Cibola representative, outgoing Democrat Rep. Harry Garcia, were able to pass two new tax benefits for New Mexico’s veterans.
His advocacy extended beyond veterans, focusing on policies to strengthen New Mexico’s economy and protect its environment. Alcon’s leadership as Chair of the Consumer and Public Affairs Committee reflected his commitment to addressing issues that mattered most to everyday New Mexicans.
Speaker of the House Javier Martínez (D-Albuquerque) praised Alcon’s contributions, stating, “Rep. Alcon has been a champion for his community throughout his fifteen years in the Roundhouse. He helped deliver huge wins for veterans, active service members, and all the people of New Mexico. We will miss him dearly.”
Alcon’s impact on District 6 is undeniable. Over the years, he worked to ensure that the voices of rural and often underserved communities were heard in Santa Fe. His approach to leadership was rooted in his lived experiences, allowing him to connect with the strong military- oriented families across the district.
Whether addressing economic concerns, advocating for public health, or ensuring environmental protections, Alcon’s focus remained on building a better future for his constituents. His efforts earned him respect on both sides of the aisle and gratitude from those he served.
With his departure, the state begins the process of filling his seat. Both the Cibola and McKinley County Commissions will nominate candidates, and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham will select one to complete the remainder of his term.
