GALLUP, N.M. – A major Interstate 40 construction project is resuming east of Gallup, adding to ongoing safety improvement work along one of western New Mexico’s busiest travel corridors.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation announced that the second phase of a $34.5 million roadway reconstruction project on I-40 east of Gallup will resume May 11.

NMDOT District Six and contractor FNF Construction, Inc. will rebuild two 12-foot driving lanes with 12-foot inside and outside shoulders on both eastbound and westbound I-40.

Two lanes are expected to remain open to traffic in each direction during the project. The speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph through the work zone.

Construction is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. This phase of the project is expected to continue through late June or early July, weather permitting.

Drivers are reminded to use caution in the work zone, obey posted signs and detours, reduce speed, and watch for construction workers and equipment.

NMDOT said the work is part of its continued commitment to roadway safety and thanked the traveling public for cooperating during construction.
