GRANTS, N.M. — Sophia Romasanta is this year’s recipient of the Steve Bell GHS Scholarship. The award comes with a $1,000 check to help fund Miss Romasanta’s continuing education. Like Steve Bell, Sophia knows what it means to start over with a new set of circumstances. She has adapted to a new country and says she wants to “use her education as a tool to create positive change even when challenges arise.”

The scholarship committee who chose Miss Romasanta as this year’s recipient was most impressed by her understanding that, in her words, “growth often comes from discomfort,” and in her willingness “to keep moving forward even when things are uncertain.”

The scholarship is awarded in honor of Steve Bell, an outstanding athlete who passed in 2018 and is survived by his wife, Helen, and three children, Darrell, Jackie, and Michelle, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren in the area. Steve overcame many difficulties, including a battle with cancer to become the first wheelchair bound police detective in New Mexico. He served the community as a police officer for many years, also founding the Kids and Cops Rodeo and coaching girls’ basketball at GHS.

Miss Romasanta is an outstanding scholar and athlete, who says she intends to “pursue a path where [she] can make a meaningful difference in how organizations and people function.” We look forward to watching as she moves forward to “create positive change, even when challenges arise.”
