Water Update: Bluewater Lake & Rio San Jose

Body

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – This report seeks to track the flow of water in Cibola County. Bluewater Lake and the Rio San Jose both have United States Geological Survey monitoring stations where this data is pulled from.

Bluewater Lake continues its late-summer decline, with a recorded volume of 5,162 acre-feet as of 7:15 a.m. on September 2— down nearly 500 acre-feet since mid-August. The lake's elevation now stands at 7,370.55 feet, with a surface area of 523 acres. Despite the decrease, boating conditions remain excellent, according to New Mexico State Parks.

The Rio San Jose held relatively steady, measuring 2.07 feet on the morning of September 2. This represents a slight drop from 2.11 feet recorded on August 26. The river’s modest fluctuations continue to reflect the region’s persistent drought and limited rainfall.
