The skies were clear, the engines were loud, and the community turned out in force this past Saturday for the 3rd Annual Wings ’N Wheels event at the Grants-Milan Airport. The day-long celebration of aviation, automobiles, and family fun packed the grounds with visitors from across Cibola County and beyond. Festivities began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling the airport’s brand-new pilots’ lounge and hangar, a milestone in ongoing improvements at the regional facility. Local leaders and aviation officials joined the public in marking the occasion, calling the expansion an important investment in both air service and community events. From there, the action shifted to the skies and the tarmac. Fly-ins and a static display of airplanes drew aviation enthusiasts of all ages, while aerobatic skydivers wowed the crowd with high-flying stunts against the late-summer backdrop. Inside, the Aviation Museum welcomed visitors eager to explore the rich history of flight in the region. On the ground, the “wheels” half of the showcase revved up as hot rods, classic cars, and off-road vehicles lined the lot. Families strolled between vendor booths, the bustling kids zone, and a food alley offering a wide variety of eats. The airport was alive with sound as the live band Back In The Saddle kept the crowd entertained throughout the afternoon. One of the most anticipated highlights was the Pets on Parade, which brought plenty of cheers and laughter as community members showcased their costumed cats, dogs, and even a few more unusual companions.
Organizers called this year’s turnout one of the strongest yet, noting how the event has grown into a staple of the local calendar. “It’s about bringing people together, celebrating our aviation heritage, and giving families something to look forward to every summer,” one volunteer said. As the sun set over the runways, visitors lingered over the rows of polished cars and planes, a fitting close to a day that celebrated both the future of the airport and the community spirit of Grants and Milan.
