The Grants High School Boys’ and Girls’ soccer teams participated at a tournament in Aztec this last weekend.
“We had a wake up call for our young core on how fast and physical the varsity level of play is,” said GHS head boys soccer coach John Malcolm “But I believe it gets them ready for the seasons and it’s a good learning experience for them.”
The Pirates lost to Aztec 4-1 in the first game of the tournament.
Roberto Arredondo scored the goal in the 1st period off a pass from Antonio Perez.
The Pirates subsequently lost 6-0 to Pagosa High School and 7-0 to Kirtland High School.
The Pirates (0-3) will host their next game on August 26 against Miyamura (0-2).
Gametime is following the girls game at 4pm.
Lady Pirates
The Lady Pirates soccer team went 0-3 after their performance at the Aztec tournament. “Our team faced a tough start to the tournament after a late arrival,” said first year head coach Shaun Sanchez. “Despite early setbacks the team grew stronger each game and finished with much more competitive performance.”
Sanchez had much praise for his goalkeeper, “Our freshman goalkeeper Aaliyah Barela, a true standout, using her skill and attitude in the goal were remarkable and gave us a glimpse of a very bright future for the program,” said Sanchez.
The Pirates lost 10-0 to Aztec in the first game, 11-0 to Los Lunas in the second game and a closer 2-0 to Portales in the third and final game of that tournament.
Next up for the Lady Pirates will be Miyamura (2-0-1) on August 26 at home.
