GRANTS, N.M. Homecoming was all Pirates: Grants raced to a 47–0 halftime lead and routed Kirtland Central 66–14, powered by senior Quarterback Tristin Fernandez’s 350 passing yards and three touchdown grabs from Cardenio Chavez, improving to 4–1 while the Broncos fell to 1–4.
It was just about over at halftime with the score 47-0 as the amped up Pirates had already scored 27 points in the first quarter. Then – the Pirates went on to score another 20 points in the second quarter!
The third was a repeat of the first two quarters, the Pirates chalked up 19 points and the defense held KC to 0 points. The Final score was 66-14. The Pirates improve to 41 and KC drops to 1-4.
Senior quarterback Tristin Fernandez went an impressive 9-15 and threw 350 yards and scored one rushing touchdown.
Also, scoring one rushing touchdown apiece were Julian Fernandez and Joe Clawson.
Cardenio Chavez, a senior receiver, had four receptions for 159 yards and three touchdowns.
Coudy Melonas and Isaiah Ortega had one receiving touchdown apiece.
The homecoming crowd was spirited and lively for this 2025 homecoming game.
Next up for the Pirates is a road trip to Aztec to take on the 1-4 Tigers who have been struggling this season.
The Pirates in the most recent NMOT-Sports coaches poll the Pirates were ranked 4th in 4-A.
Cibola Sports Round-Up
The GHS girls cross country team placed first at the Rio Rancho Jamboree this past weekend. Led by senior Laia Martinez, who placed first for varsity girls with a time of 21.13.0
Standout 2A Laguna-Acoma cross country runner Tagoya Pedro, senior, placed an impressive 13th overall with a time of 15.51.5 in a field that featured many top state cross country talent in all classes.

6-6 after defeating Del Norte (1-6) on September 17th, 25-23, 25-12, 25-13.
