RIO RANCHO, N.M. — Professional hockey is skating back into New Mexico as the New Mexico Goatheads were unveiled Sept. 26 as the state’s newest professional hockey franchise, with the club set to begin play in the 2026–27 season at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
The team’s identity leans into familiar desert grit. The “Goatheads” name nods to the notorious goathead thorn—tough, stubborn, and impossible to ignore—while the logo blends in the power and profile of ibex goats found in the Florida Mountains of southern New Mexico. The color palette—desert red, sand, and Rio Grande blue—aims to stand out on the ice and on shelves.
“This brand represents New Mexico’s toughness, pride, and resilience,” General Manager Jared Johnson said in a team announcement. “We wanted something authentic to our community, and we believe the Goatheads are a team and a symbol fans across the state can rally behind.”
The visual package was developed with The Barn Creative, a firm known for sports branding. Alongside the reveal, the team said fan merchandise is available and that season-ticket deposits are open.
The Goatheads will compete in the ECHL, a mid-tier professional league that serves as a development pipeline between NHL organizations and the AHL. A formal onice timeline—coaching staff, player signings, and the inaugural schedule— will follow as the franchise builds toward opening night.
For now, the club is focused on planting roots. The team is accepting $50 season-ticket deposits for priority access to 2026–27 seat selections at the Rio Rancho Events Center, and early apparel drops are live, the Goatheads said. The organization has also launched its statewide “Rep the Herd” branding push.
New Mexico has a history with the sport at various levels, and the Goatheads’ arrival marks the return of professional hockey to the state—this time with a statewide badge and an identity designed to feel unmistakably local.
