GRANTS, N.M. -The Grants High School volleyball team is 7-10, 0-2 after this past week’s matches.

The Lady Pirates lost to district rival St. Pius 30 (25-9, 25-7, 25-11) on October 9th. They currently are fourth out of five teams in district 5 4A. St. Pius leads the district with at 12-3, 2-0. Their next two games are this Tuesday, the 14th of October when they host a struggling Highland team at 0-14, 0-0) and then they travel to play a well-oiled 11-4, 0-1 Belen squad on Thursday, October 16.

The GHS boys’ soccer team lost their last two contests and are currently 3-14,1-4 and are currently fourth in district 5 4A.

On October 9 they lost 7-1 to Valencia (8-9, 3-2) in a district game then lost a non-district game 2-0 to Kirtland Central. Carlos Fernandez, a senior, scored the sole goal for the Pirates in the Valencia game.

Kirtland Central leads their five-team-district with a record of 10-6-1, 4-1.

Next up for the Pirates will be two district games. First, they will face a dominant St. Pius' team (12-1-3, 5-0) on Tuesday, October 14 at home, followed by an away game to Highland (6-10,3-1) on Thursday, October 16.

The Lady Pirates soccer team is currently 1-16, 0-5 after a couple of losses.

The Valencia Jaguars (3-13, 3-20) defeated them 5-1 on October 9 and then on October 11 in a district game and then they lost to Kirtland Central (8-6,1-3) by a score of 10-1. Alyssa Newberry scored the goal against Valencia for the Pirates.

Next up for the lady a Pirates will be St. Pius (12-4, 5-0) at home on the 14th and Highland (10-6, 3-1) on the 16th. The Lady Pirates are fifth in their district.

The Laguna-Acoma district football game last week against McCurdy took a negative turn as plays was suspended in the second quarter due to a melee that broke out amongst the student-athletes. No details at this time of deadline on the incident. The game was called with the score 6-6 and both teams received tie. Next up will be Newcomb on October 17th, Newcome comes in at 16, 0-1 while the Hawks are currently sitting on a 2-3-1, 0-1-1 record. That tie in the Mc-Curdy contest kept L-A 4th in the district while McCurdy stayed third in that district with Hozho Academy at the one spot and Navajo Prep at the 2 spot in that district.

The Lady Hawks volleyball team is 7-8, 1-1 after 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-18) win over Navajo Pine on October 11.

Next up will be a district game against Hozho Academy on October 14th. That will be a crucial game as Hozho Academy leads the district and L-A is third in the district.
