GRANTS, N.M. Quicker than you can say fast break here we are already two games deep in the Lady Pirate basketball season as December kicks in.
The Lady Pirates lost a very close game to a St. Michaels last week by a score of 48-50.
“Even with big kinks to work out–we had opportunities to win,” said Lady Pirate basketball head coach Jesi Mandagaran.
Mandagaran acknowledged that St. Michaels are well coached and has very seasoned players. With that being said, “Our girls are fighters—no doubt–we don’t give up easily—they are super hungry,” said Mandagaran.
Leading the charge for the Lady Pirates was Demi Martinez who had 16 points in the game followed by Promise Garcia with 13 points in that game.
“Demi and Promise have been our biggest contributors in both games,” said Mandagaran of her leading scorers.
In their first game of the season, the Lady Pirates played another seasoned team, Pojoaque Valley, whom they lost to by another close score, 57-53.
“We are competing and that’s all we can ask for,” said Mandagaran as she summed up the first two games of the season.
Next up for the Lady 02 Pirates will be Bernalillo (2-0) on December 4th at home and another home game on December 6th against Laguna-Acoma.

The Laguna-Acoma Lady Hawks are 1-0 after defeating Moriarty 33-26 on December 1st. Next up for the Lady Hawks will be Mescalero Apache (0-0) at home on December 2nd and then they will play the Grants Lady Pirates on December 6th in Grants
