GRANTS, N.M. - The Grants High School Boys Basketball Team is starting out their season 2-1, and their next two games will test the young Pirates.
“Our guys are ready for it,” said Grants High School Head Boys’ Basketball Coach Landon Chavez about his next “tough” games against St. Michaels High School (22) on December 9 at home and then Gallup High School (3-1) on December 11 on the road.
Recapping the first of the season where the Pirates defeated Miyamura 53-46 Chavez said, “Miyamura was a slow start–but getting that first win set the tone for our group.”
The Top 5 Ranked Taos Tigers, on December 4, gave the Pirates a tough game and their first loss of the season (87-67).
“Taos challenged us with their size and shooting,” said Chavez. “We battled back and cut it to six in the third quarter— but foul trouble and 15 missed free throws ended up being the difference.”
The Eddie Pena matchup on December 6 matched up the Pirates with our sister school, Laguna- Acoma (0-4).
“It’s always a good atmosphere that the community looks forward to every year,” said Chavez. The Pirates defeated L-A by a score of 81-21.
The L-A boys basketball team is currently 0-4. L-A dropped their first game, a close game that went to overtime, to Moriarty on December 1, 61-58.
On December 2 they lost to Mescalero Apache by a score of 55-46 just before playing Grants. Most recently they lost to Cottonwood Classic Prep 78-48. Next up for the Hawks will be Estancia on December 11 at home.
The Lady Hawks basketball team is currently 31 after defeating Moriarty on December 1, 33-26; then, defeating Mescalero Apache 46-41 on December 2. On December 6 they played the Lady Pirates for the Eddie Pena matchup and lost 39-25.
