ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico United closed the books on 2025 as one of the USL Championship’s most compelling and community-driven success stories.

With a dramatic playoff run, key player departures, bold new signings, and a deepening identity on and off the field, the Black & Yellow now turn the page toward 2026 with both momentum and clarity of purpose.

A Season to Remember

Under Head Coach Dennis Sanchez, New Mexico United returned to form in 2025, advancing to the Western Conference Final for the first time in five years.

After a strong regular season campaign, the club reasserted itself as a title contender while continuing to lead the league in atmosphere and fan engagement at its home ground – Isotopes Park, better known as The Lab.

The playoff run was anchored by standout performances across the roster.

Center back Talen Maples emerged as one of the league’s most complete defenders, scoring seven goals and earning a spot on the 2025 USL Championship All-League Second Team. His presence on both sides of the ball proved critical throughout the season.

“We are proud of Talen and him representing New Mexico United on his allleague selection,” Sanchez said. “Talen leads by example every day through his professionalism, work ethic, and will to win.”

Midfield general Valentin Noël, versatile defender Zico Bailey, and veteran leader Will Seymour helped solidify a team that never lost its belief. Despite injuries and the challenge of integrating new pieces, United finished among the top seeds in the West and entered the postseason with real ambition.

But the dream ended just short of the ultimate prize.

On November 15, a soldout crowd at The Lab witnessed a 3–0 loss to FC Tulsa in the Western Conference Final. Despite key saves from Kris Shakes, United couldn’t overcome two early goals from Tulsa’s Taylor Calheira and a third late strike that sealed the result.

Still, the season was widely regarded as one of the most inspiring in club history— proof of what the team could accomplish with trust in its culture and commitment to the state it represents.

Roster Turnover Begins with Respectful Goodbyes

Following the conclusion of the season, United began reshaping its roster.

Among the most notable departures was goalkeeper Alex Tambakis, a fan favorite and foundational figure since 2021. Tambakis leaves the USL Championship as the all-time leader in regular season saves (655), tied for the league record in shutouts (58), and 10th all-time in minutes played (21,194). In Albuquerque, he exits as one of the most beloved players to ever wear the crest—closing his United career with 145 appearances and countless moments of brilliance between the posts.

Another major change came on January 8, when United announced the transfer of Talen Maples to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC for a club-record intraleague transfer fee. The 24-year-old made 75 appearances over two seasons, scoring 13 goals while anchoring United’s defense.

“We would like to thank Talen for his contributions to the club over the past two seasons and wish him the very best in the next chapter of his career,” said Sporting Director Itamar Keinan.

A New Wave Arrives

Even as farewells defined the early offseason, United wasted no time reloading. On January 1, the club made headlines by acquiring Barbados international Niall Reid-Stephen from South Georgia Tormenta FC. The 24-year-old winger brings explosive pace, creative flair, and a nose for goal—scoring 16 goals with 8 assists in 2025 and earning USL League One First Team honors.

“He is an exciting player and a real attacking threat, and I look forward to seeing him score goals in front of our fans,” said Keinan.

On the back line, United made a priority signing on January 9 by officially bringing back Kipp Keller. The 25-year-old defender joined the team on loan midseason from MLS side Minnesota United FC and made an instant impact. In 12 appearances, Keller delivered 72 clearances, 40 recoveries, and one goal—showcasing his leadership and tenacity.

“From the moment last season ended, bringing Kipp back was a top priority,” said Keinan. “His commitment was unmatched, and we’re incredibly excited to have him back.”

What Comes Next

NewMexicoUnited’s2026 campaign officially kicks off on March 14 with a road match against Oakland Roots SC.

The club returns home on March 28, hosting Colorado Springs in what is sure to be a fiery rivalry fixture at The Lab.

The season will feature 25 teams divided into two conferences, with each team playing 30 matches. The top eight from each side will qualify for the playoffs, which begin in late October and culminate in a nationally televised final on CBS.

Open tryouts will be held January 10 at Kraemer Fields—a continuation of United’s commitment to finding and fostering New Mexican talent.

“We play for more than wins,” said Sanchez. “We play for this state. We play for each other.”

From heartbreak to triumph, from farewell to reinvention, United’s story continues. And in 2026, all of New Mexico will be watching.
