GRANTS, N.M. - , January 29, 2026— The American Red Cross New Mexico Chapter and Grants Fire Department are teaming up to host a Sound the Alarm smoke alarm installation event on Saturday, February 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., helping local families reduce the risk of home fires and increase safety at home.

Volunteer installers will meet at Grants Fire Station #1, located at 620 W. High Street, Grants, NM 87020, before heading out into the community to install free smoke alarms and share critical home fire safety information with residents.

“Home fires remain the most common disaster we respond to, and working together to install smoke alarms and share safety information is one of the most effective ways we can help protect families and save lives,” said Kathy Segura-Salas, Executive Director of the Red Cross New Mexico Chapter.

To support volunteers throughout the day, donuts and coffee will be provided in the morning, and lunch will be provided by the Grants Fire Department.

Home fires are the most frequent disaster in the United States, accounting for the majority of Red Cross disaster responses each year. Working together with local fire departments and community partners, events like Sound the Alarm play a vital role in helping families prepare for emergencies before they happen.

About Home Fire Response

When a home fire occurs, Red Cross Disaster Action Teams are often among the first on the scene, working closely with fire departments to provide immediate assistance. This support can include temporary shelter, financial assistance for essentials like food and clothing, emotional support, and recovery planning for families affected by fire. Preventing fires before they happen— through education and smoke alarm installation— remains one of the most effective ways to save lives.
