GRANTS, N.M. - The Lady Pirates are currently 12-10, 1-3 after splitting their last 2 games.
On January 27th they played the Lady Hornets of Highland (12-7,3-0) and lost that game 60-48. The Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Pirates 20-9 in the first quarter and the Pirates tightened it up the second quarter Highland was only able to outscore them by one point for a halftime score of 33-21. In the 3rd quarter the Hornets outscored the Pirates 14-8 and in the 4th the Pirates won the quarter outscoring them 19-13.
On February 2nd the Lady Pirates played Belen and took the “W” with a score of 66-48.
“We won by 18,” said GHS Lady Pirates head coach Jesi Mandagaran. “Our defense needs to be better—as well as our rebounding if we want to battle the rest of the games in district.”
The Lady Pirates will play Valencia (14-6, 2-1) on Thursday, February 6th.
“We aim to redeem ourselves defensively and show up better than last time,” said Mandagran of that upcoming contest. “Our potential is great but only if we can get 4 quarters together.”
The Lady Pirates are ranked 15th in 4A girls basketball and they did not receive any votes in the nmotsports.com 4A coaches poll.
