Goatheads take next step toward inaugural season with affiliation and mascot reveal

RIO RANCHO, N.M. – The New Mexico Goatheads will host a public announcement event on Saturday, February 21, unveiling two major milestones in the franchise’s launch: the team’s official NHL and AHL affiliation and the introduction of the Goatheads’ mascot.

The event will take place at THE BLOCK in Rio Rancho, with festivities beginning at 12:00 PM MT.

Doors will open at 11:00 AM MT, and the official announcement will occur shortly after noon. This announcement represents a significant step forward as the Goatheads prepare for their inaugural 2026–27 ECHL season, marking continued momentum toward the return of professional hockey to New Mexico.

“This affiliation announcement is an important moment for our organization and our fans,” said Jared Johnson, General Manager of the New Mexico Goatheads. “Aligning with NHL and AHL partners as we launch the Goatheads strengthens our foundation and reinforces our commitment to building something special for hockey fans across New Mexico.”

Representatives from the Goatheads’ NHL affiliate organization will be in attendance, joining team leadership and staff for the announcement and participating in the event. In addition to the affiliation announcement, the event will include the first public appearance of the Goatheads’ mascot, photo opportunities, family fun, and opportunities for fans to engage with team leadership and affiliate representatives.

Following the reveal, fans are invited to remain at THE BLOCK to watch the Men’s Hockey Bronze Medal Game from the Winter Olympics, beginning at 12:40 PM MT. The Goatheads also announced that THE BLOCK will serve as the official watch party location for all New Mexico Goatheads away games during the 2026–27 season.

The event is free and open to the public.
