GRANTS, N.M. - A local group of Los Alamitos Middle School students brought home a championship this month after the Lady Hornets 7th grade girls basketball team finished first in its division at the Ball Out Tournament in Bernalillo.
The tournament was held March 5-8, and the Lady Hornets capped off the weekend with a first-place finish after what organizers described as a strong showing of teamwork, determination and sportsmanship.
The Lady Hornets are a local AAU basketball team made up entirely of seventhgrade students from Los Alamitos Middle School. In addition to their recent tournament win, the team is expected to remain active throughout the summer, competing in tournaments in Albuquerque and traveling later in the season to Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
Team representatives said the players competed hard throughout the tournament and represented their community with pride while bringing home the championship.
The team is coached by Joshua Marquez.
