GRANTS, N.M. - The Grants High School Baseball Team is currently 4-4 after splitting with Los Alamos in a double header last week, losing the first game 5-6 and winning the second game 4-4.

“We are still trying to get things situated with the line up,” said GHS head baseball coach Mike Furbee. “We are also trying to manage pitching with 9 games in a 14-day stretch.

Also, only recently have the basketball players made their way over to baseball.

The Pirates lost their first game against Los Alamos, by a close score of 5-3. That game went the nine innings distance.

“We dropped one of each of the doubleheaders because of lack of execution and lack of timely hitting,” said Furbee.

“We are continuing to work on these issues and hope to have things in order when we hit district play.”

In that first game for the Pirates, Dereck Rhoades had 1 RBI. Five Pirates had 1 hit apiece and Colin Lundstrom had 2 hits.

Pitching for the Pirates Nathan Nieto who allowed 5 hits, 5 runs, 4 earned runs and had 1 strikeout.

Evan Taylor followed up and allowed 3 hits and had 5 strikeouts.

In the second game, Evan Taylor and Daniel Garcia had 2 RBI’s and 2 Pirates had hits while Rhoades and Joziah Ortega had 2 hits apiece.

In softball action the Lady Pirates are 6-4 after 5 games since March 11th.

They were defeated 15-4 and 24-7 by 5A Capital (5-3) on March 11th.

“Capital is always a tough trip for us,” said GHS softball head coach Victor Aldaz. “We were defeated by a large margin– we just didn’t come ready to play.”

In that game Deliliah Martinez stood out as a “constant presence” by the coach of Santa Fe. “Rightfully so,” said Aldaz. “She’s everywhere making plays.”

On March 12th they lost to Bernalillo (3-1) by a score of 9-4. “Another tough game, we found ways to hit and matched them in total hits –but we left 11 runners on base including a bases loaded opportunity,” said Aldaz.

On March 16th they played a double header against 3A Newcomb High School (0-2) in their season opener and defeated them 36-0 and 330. “We scored 69 runs in two games,” said Aldaz. Notables in that doubleheader were Olivia Toivanen with 9 stolen bases, Deliliah Martinez with two inside the park home runs and a total of 5 RBI”s in both games. “We’ve been emphasizing baserunning and it showed with a total of 76 stolen bases and 53 hits and 39 RBI’s. Next up for the Lady Pirates is the Linda Crabtree Tournament in Farmington where they will start off with Pojoaque Valley (24.)
