The Cibola Citizen wants to share an important update with our readers and our community.
As many of you know, 2025 was a difficult year for our newspaper. Like so many small, independent publications across the country, we have faced real financial challenges. Earlier this year, we made the difficult decision to increase the cost of the newspaper to $2 to help keep the Cibola Citizen going.
Today, we must share another difficult reality: the Cibola Citizen will be closing its physical office.
We want to be very clear about one thing – your community newspaper is staying open. The Cibola Citizen is not going away.
Your newspaper remains committed to serving Cibola County with the local news, public information, and community coverage that our readers deserve.
We are deeply grateful to our advertisers, our business partners, and the many people in this community who continue to support us. Quite simply, without them, we would not be here. We are grateful to our readers, who have trusted us, talked with us, challenged us, encouraged us, and made this newspaper part of the life of this county.
We know many residents value being able to visit with our staff, ask questions, place ads, purchase papers, and stay connected to the newspaper in person. Even without a permanent office, we are still available by phone, and we are still willing to meet with members of the community.
We are especially thankful to the Grants Public Library, one of our best community partners, for allowing us to meet with clients who need to pay with cash or purchase bundles of newspapers. That partnership means a great deal to us.
For now, the Cibola Citizen is housed here at 200 W. Santa Fe Ave., where we will remain through May 31. After that date, our office will become virtual while we continue working from home.
That is not what we want. We do not want to work apart from the people we serve. We want a stable office. We want to be in the city. We want to be accessible to the public. We want to continue building this newspaper in the heart of Cibola County, just as we have been here on Route 66.
Leaving our physical office is painful. We are sad about it. It has been an honor to work in a place so tied to the life and history of Grants and Cibola County.
But this is not the end of the Cibola Citizen. It is an obstacle, and one we intend to overcome.
We will work hard to secure a physical office again as soon as possible. In the meantime, we ask for your patience, your understanding, and your continued support as we work through this transition.
Thank you, Cibola County, for your trust. Thank you for reading. Thank you for believing in local journalism.
We are still here. And we are still working for you.
