GRANTS, N.M. - The Grants High School Pirate Baseball Team lost its three most recent games.
“We are still making adjustments to lineups trying to find one that plays solid defense,” said GHS head baseball coach Mike Furbee of the team’s recent woes.
Also, basketball players have recently joined the line-up adding more logistics to the team’s lineup.
On March 19 the Pirates lost to Aztec (8-4) by a score of 9-6 on the road and also lost the next day to 5A Farmington (7-6).
On March 21 they hosted 5A Durango (4-2) and lost 18-2.
In the Durango game coach Furbee said, “We committed 6 errors and against a quality team like that you can’t do that.”
The Pirates next game will be hosting Miyamura (7-5) on March 24th for a double-header.
“We have moved some guys around to try and fix our outfield play– we are hoping that we get things situated and hope to get back on track against Miyamura.”
In the Durango game Estevan Barela had 1 RBI and Joziah Ortega had 2 hits while Colin Lundstrom had 1 hit.
Ortega pitched 3 innings allowing for 6 hits, 8 runs, 7 earned runs, 6 walks and 1 strikeout. Aaden Jiron pitched 2 inning allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, 3 earned runs, 1 walk and 0 strikeouts.

The GHS Softball went 2-1 last week after defeating Pojoaque Valley (2-8), 25-5 on March 20 and then defeating Albuquerque Academy (1-10) by a score of 23-7.
“Against Academy we started off slow and found ourselves trailing 6-1 in the second inning,” said GHS head softball coach Victor Aldaz. “The girls regrouped, settled in and started producing at the plate.”
In that game Deliliah Martinez drove in 5 runs off of 4 hits. On the defensive end Makayla Chavez had two huge catches that game the the team “much momentum” according to Aldaz.
Also on March 21 they lost to Gallup (6-6) by a score of 13-4.
“This was our second game against Gallup this season,” said Aldaz. “We had innings that hurt us– where we gave up runs we shouldn’t have.”
The Pirates allowed 3 runs in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd innings.
Eighth grade pitcher Natalie Chavez, an 8th grader, had 5 strike outs and allowed 6 hits.
Aldaz had praise for his defense but acknowledged that offensively “we couldn’t capitalize on our opportunities.”
