Baseball Wins last 4 Games; Softball 2

GRANTS, N.M. - The Grants High School Boys’ Baseball Team won their last 4 games after defeating Miyamura in a double- header, 5-4, 6-3 on March 24th at home.

On March 27th they defeated Kirtland Central in a double header, 5-2, 12-0. “We definitely needed those wins,” said GHS head baseball coach Mike Furbee. “Hopefully we are starting to hit our stride as we start district play.

In the 5-4 win over Miyamura Joziah Ortega had 3 RBI’s followed by Daniel Garcia and Evan Taylor had 1 RBI a piece.

Ortega also had 3 hits while Garcia had 2 hits. Pitching for the Pirates was Evan Taylor who pitched 4 innings allowing for 1 hit and 4 strikeouts. Daniel Garcia pitched 2 innings allowing 3 hits, 4 runs, 4 earned runs and he had 4 strikeouts. In the second game Estevan Barela had 2 RBI’s while Colin Lundstrom had 1 RBI. Barela had 3 hits followed by Ortega, Lundstrom Taylor and Floyd Lee with 1 hit a piece.

Barela pitched the 7 inning game allowing 3 hits, 3 runs and 11 strikeouts.

“We have some young guys with very little varsity experience but I feel like we are starting to figure things out,” said Furbee.

Good time to figure things out as they start district play on March 31st against Valencia High School (8-7).

Currently the Pirates are 9-8.

The GHS softball team is 10-5 after defeating Zuni in a double header 16-1 and 22-1. They will start districts on March 31st against Valencia High School (4-13) at home.
